The purpose of this Humber River Hospital (HRH) Reactivation Care Centre (RCC) is to fill the gap in Ontario’s healthcare system by providing an innovative model that allows patients waiting to be remitted into Palliative Care Units or Senior’s Centre facilities with proper care all the while reducing Alternate Level of Care (ALC) pressures on acute care hospitals.
In 2015 HRH amalgamated their existing locations and opened the most energy efficient, fully digital acute care hospital in North America. Achieving LEED Gold certification, the facility contains a total of 45 departments within a 14-story, 1.8-million-square-foot hospital.
All patient units at this existing facility were relocated. As a result, these buildings in north-west Toronto were completely vacant for 3 years.
The existing Church Site towers have been transformed into a state-of-the-art facility that is a quiet, peaceful place for therapy, rehabilitation and activation supports relative to the pace and scale of an acute care hospital. The barrier-free facility was designed to provide specialized therapies in a setting designed to focus on the needs of the patient and support transition to home, or an alternate facility.
Our project scope included the complete renovations to Tower A - 40,000 sq. ft. over 2 floors, Tower B – 60,000 sq. ft. over 4 floors, and in Tower C – 16,000 sq. ft. over 2 floors as well as a new 3 floor elevator. Major infrastructure upgrades and associated equipment were required to accommodate the 230 new patient beds. A tranquil wellness garden and pergolas provides a calming environment for patients, staff and visitors.
Patients enjoy single or 2-patient rooms which include new equipment and fixturing, and have access to specialized equipment, such as patient lift apparatuses, which reduce risks of hospital-acquired pressure injuries and frequent falls.
As experts in hospital redevelopment and renovations, Compass has unique insights into the day-to-day operations of healthcare spaces and was able to proactively apply this experience throughout this complex project. This ensured construction was successfully completed within the required Fast-Tracked schedule.
The HRH Operations Team was able to successfully facilitate a phased move-in of staff and patients from the various hospitals occupying their respective floors. With strong support from the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care as well as Ontario Health (of which the former TC-LHIN is now a part of) this RCC provides an expanded level of support and services available to ALC clients.
