Home to many of Humber College’s skilled trades programs, the Centre for Trades & Technology takes students beyond a traditional classroom and provides hands-on practice. They learn valuable skills by using the latest industry software programs and working in fully equipped up-to-date labs and shops.

Our construction management mandate was to provide interior renovations and complete retrofit of a recently purchased industrial building located near Humber College’s northern campus. A former furniture manufacturing facility was to be converted into a first class educational and training facility.

The challenge of this 4-phased project was two-fold: First, the intended uses for the building were quite varied. The final plan called for standard classrooms, trade shops, tiered teaching spaces, administration offices, food service and even construction of an indoor, full size residential townhouse development. In addition, large skylights, exterior wall glazing sections, a dust collection system and extensive mechanical and electrical upgrades were required.

The second challenge was the schedule. The first phase of the building was required for occupancy within three and a half months with the remainder of the building to be turned over several months later. This aggressive schedule necessitated sequential tendering, overlapping trade work, multiple site supervisory teams and extended work hours.

In collaboration with the entire project team, we developed and implemented unique construction solutions to ensure the project’s success. Compass tackled this challenging project the same we always do – using a great team of construction professionals mandated to provide the highest quality of service, to supply outstanding value and to deliver on schedule.
